School-wide Behavior Supports

Schools that have been successful in implementing school-wide behavior support systems describe the following benefits:

The Collaborative is pleased to offer professional development training on one of the most pressing issues affecting special educators today: school-wide behavior. Our programs are designed to develop practical skills for creating positive, effective, learning environments to meet the needs of all children. Some of the topics covered include the following:

Building Inclusive School Environments
Training includes strategies for identifying and defining an individual school's needs. Participating schools learn how to collect information designed to aid with the development, implementation, and evaluation of a school-wide positive discipline program.
Classroom Management Using Positive Behavior Support
One of the constant challenges teachers face is discipline. This training provides educators with a variety of new skills and knowledge based on the best research available on effective classroom management. An emphasis is placed on proactive strategies for creating positive learning environments.
Functional Behavior Strategies for Serving the Most Challenging Students in the Least Restrictive Environment
Behavior management techniques that work with typical students may not work with students exhibiting more severe behavior problems. In fact some common practices can make situations worse, especially with students whose problem behavior tends to be sudden and explosive. We provide educators with skills that will reduce the likelihood that problem behavior will occur and strategies for de-escalating problems when they do arise.

The Collaborative staff will work with your district to determine what is already working and what services are most needed to supplement current practices. Programs are developed based on the individual needs of the district. Please contact us if you would like to hear the experiences of district leaders who are currently involved in school-wide behavior supports trainings offered by the Collaborative.

School-wide Positive Behavior Support Systems: Design and Implementation

The program commences with a two-day institute, that focuses on the foundation of school-wide behavior supports through presentations of research and data, discussions of practical strategies for accommodating students in the least restrictive environment and options to serve the most challenging students. The three days of follow-up training are designed for school-based teams, who attended the two-day institute, to deepen their knowledge of school-wide behavior supports. Team members learn and practice strategies for collecting information designed to aid with program development and evaluation. In addition, participants are expected to collect and analyze critical behavior data, present their findings to their respective school staffs and communities, and lead small groups in the design and implementation of a school-wide behavior improvement plan for the following school year.
