The overall goal of the National Dropout Prevention Center for Students with Disabilities is to increase rates of school completion by students with disabilities and emphasize dropout prevention for enrolled students and reentry into education by students who have dropped out of school. The Center focuses on three major, interacting areas to improve graduation rates for students with disabilities: knowledge development, technical assistance to state and local agencies, and communications and dissemination. The Collaborative serves as the expert on critical issues facing the special education community and assists in the identification of model programs. The Collaborative also provides critical planning, networking, and dissemination functions in support of the project's mission.
Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the University of Maryland and Collaborative have worked together to create a project entitled, "Unlocking the Power of District Data to Improve Outcomes for Students with Disabilities" to help school districts build capacity in analyzing large-scale data sets to make real and measurable improvements in outcomes for students with disabilities. In September 2009, nine Urban Special Education Leadership Collaborative member school districts were selected to participate in the project and representatives from those districts attended a productive, two-day, hands-on institute in Bethesda, Maryland, as well as participated in follow-up work back in their school districts.
