Building Inclusive Schools
The Collaborative is pleased to offer a professional development opportunity specifically designed for special and general educators who are involved with inclusive education in grades 6-12, High Performing, Inclusive Secondary Schools: A Leadership Institute.
Institute participants will gain knowledge and skill in the following areas:
- Relevant and practical co-teaching strategies for middle and high school classrooms, incorporating strategies for students with and without disabilities.
- Strategies to promote social success among middle and high school students.
- Progress monitoring strategies based on current trends in assessing and grading secondary students with disabilities.
- Quick and easy strategies across the content areas to impact the learning of all students.
- Curricular adaptations in a high stakes environment.
- Culturally responsive educational practices.
- Techniques for building stronger partnerships between general and special educators, as well as with students and their families.
- Effective use of common planning time.
- Valuable strategies for achieving AYP and closing the achievement gap.
The 2008-2009 Program:
During the two-day institute participants will engage in lectures, learning activities, and facilitated action planning sessions. All participants will walk away with ideas, tools and the motivation to implement innovative strategies in their school and/or classroom. A copy of Dr. Dieker's acclaimed Co-Teaching Lesson Plan Book will be provided to all attendees. For the purpose of obtaining PDPs, a Certificate of Completion will be presented to all participants who attend both days.

*Because the institute emphasizes a collaborative approach, preference will be given to a school-based team consisting of a general educator, special educator, administrator and school counselor.
Lead Faculty
Dr. Lisa Dieker is an experienced general and special education teacher, as well as a dynamic presenter with a passion for inclusion at the secondary level. Her unique focus on preparing secondary educators to meet the needs of students with disabilities in general education settings puts her in great demand. Lisa brings her rich experiences of working in inclusive classrooms and schools, as well as her enthusiasm and love of teaching. She is the author of Demystifying Secondary Inclusion and Making Inclusion Work at the Secondary Level , an extensive resource handbook each participant will receive at the seminar.
